On the coast of Byblos.

This past Sunday I FINALLY got out of Beirut and up to the north of Lebanon. I had heard much about the beauty of this ancient coastal city and it did not disappoint. The Mediterranean city and UNESCO World Heritage site is thought to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the world, with a fishermen community that was established more than 8000 years ago.

We started off the day in Halat, an area outside of Byblos. The “hike” didn’t lead to much else besides getting stuck in brush and triumphantly scaling a steep hill to a dead end, but the burbling creek that led to the sea proved good enough company.

After the hike, we set off walking to Byblos and spent the rest of our afternoon walking along the rocky beach. Riding the bus home along the old coastal road back to Beirut while the sunset set the sky on fire in vivid pink and orange, Jordan and home never felt so delightfully far away.
